VISUAL CULTURE / COMPOSITION
The things
we leave out.
On negative space, visual pauses, and the quiet work of giving an idea room.
not an absence.SPACE / ATTENTION− +
A little less, seen more clearly.
We tend to describe a composition by what it contains: a headline, an image, a line. Yet the space between these things is also doing work. It separates one thought from the next. It lets a small detail become a point of attention.
Negative space is not a rule to make everything minimal. It is a relationship. A dense page can still have a deliberate pause; an almost empty page can still feel unresolved.
Instead of asking what else belongs here, ask what deserves a little more room.
Start with one interval: the distance between a title and its first sentence. Change nothing else. Notice when the two feel connected, and when they begin to drift apart.
