On attention
A little less.
A little more room.
We tend to notice what a designer puts into the world. A shape. A colour. A carefully chosen word. But what about the things they choose to leave out?
01 A pause is not an absence.
There is a particular generosity in a page that does not ask you to look everywhere at once. A margin gives the eye somewhere to rest. A gap between two sentences lets an idea arrive before the next one begins.
Space is not the part we have forgotten to design. It is the part that allows everything else to be seen.
“What we leave open
From the INTERVAL notebook
is also what we offer.”
02 Begin with the edges.
Try a small exercise. Before adding another element, move the existing ones a little farther apart. Notice which relationships become clearer, and which were only held together by proximity.
A frame, a line of type, a single circle: each changes when the space around it changes. The edges are doing more work than we think.
03 Leave something unfinished.
Not every surface needs a statement. Not every moment needs an answer. A little openness makes room for someone else's reading, their pace, their way of being in the world.
Perhaps the most useful question is not “What else does this need?” but “What can we let it be without?”
